	@EGaffney... I think not. Even today, with all the medical advances, mosquitoes kill one person every twelve seconds. As it happens, spongebob, artefacts is NOT spelled (or spelt) wrongLY... the variant artifact is a US spelling. The Book of General Ignorance is a British book. Not that that makes artifact wrong: it just makes artefact ok too. Thanks for your nice comments anyway! Pedants unite!!! :-) PS @Qazza2k9: sounds interesting. I will check that suggestion about Sebastian Del Cana.

	Right. I have checked all of this now. It seems that Juan Sebastian Elcano (sometimes erroneously quoted as "Sebastian Del Cana") was the first man to circumnavigate the globe in a single trip. Enrique de Malaca (Henry the Black) however escaped from Elcano's command and arrived in the Far East before Elcano. This, however, is a remarkably pedantic point, and I'm not sure it fulfils the term "circumnavigate", since he wasn't really navigating, and took several different trips to do it. I will add Juan Sebastian Elcano (not Del Cana) to the list of permissible answers. :-)

	Nice quiz. I knew it wasn't Magellan, I just didn't know the name of the man who finished the expedition. (I just tried "Magellan's Crew") Also I don't think it will piss off a lot of Americans. I'm an American and I knew what he was going for. I didn't know exactly how many states were technically commonwealths (I knew Virginia and Massachusetts) but it just took a couple guesses and I got it.

	you cannot see the great wall of china from space. That's a myth and a really stupid one at that. The wall is less than 100 feet across, of course you can't see it from space. Looks like you got caught on your own little clever quiz.

	Just looked up the great wall info. Apparently it's disputed based on how far up counts as "space", and even at the lowest possible level of space the average person still cannot see the wall. You would need 20/3 vision, or more than 7 times the far-sightedness of the average human which essentially does not exist in order to see it even under the lowest possible orbit and most perfect conditions.

	great quiz. however i agree that there are in fact 50 states. despite the fact that some use the word commonwealth in their official names, they all fit the definition of a state according to the US Constitution. also i think the number of the beast is under debate and 616 is not yet widely accepted by biblical scholars. loved the mosquito question btw

	Last time I went to space the Great Wall was not recognizable, so there. And I got mosquito right - the only animal I kill on sight, regardless of its gender.

	I would like to see a source on that number of the beast, and not just a couple of people saying so in a book. There are indeed 50 states as the term is generally understood. Mosquito is not correct. People are not killed by mosquitoes, but by the diseases they carry. It is the disease organisms that are the most dangerous creatures.

	This quiz wasn't very hard for someone who's seen all QI episodes, but obviously still great fun. And I didn't remember them all :) Great to see QI get some recognition. Oh, and quiz maker - perhaps you should add more options to score the eyepatch one right? I tried answering with a sentence at first, but that just wouldn't work.

	@chocolatl - two points. Firstly, the question about mosquitos is not how many people they kill, but what is the most dangerous. Mosquitos spread thousands of diseases making them more dangerous. And secondly, even then they are a cause of death. Saying it is the diseases fault is like saying that it isn't a shark attack that would kill you, it is loss of blood.

To people saying this is sanctimonous and smug, QI is a massive programme in the UK hosted by National Treasure (tm) Stephen Fry where the aim is to make the contestants give wrong answers to questions that sound obvious. This is just a play on that.

	From Wikipedia: "This designation [of Commonwealth], which has no constitutional impact, emphasizes that they have a 'government based on the common consent of the people' as opposed to one legitimized through their earlier Royal Colony status that was derived from the King of Great Britain. The word commonwealth in this context refers to the common 'wealth' or welfare of the public and is an older term for 'republic'." In other words, yes, they call themselves commonwealths in their official state names, but they are still states. If your source says otherwise, it is mistaken. It's also mistaken if it says that you can see the Great Wall from space, which you cannot. The Great Wall is significantly narrower than an Interstate highway, yet when I fly over the US all I see of the highways is a thin white line.
