It's impossible to have 47 million speakers of Spanish in Argentina if its population is only of 40,091,359 (Oct. 2010 census). Except this minor detail, very good quiz.

Good quiz, but please accept some alternative spellings like Bahasa Indonesia, Malay, Kiswahili, and Farsi.

If you're going by native speakers, some of these need to be changed. Yoruba, Igbo, and Hausa outnumber native English speakers in Nigeria, for example, and there are not nearly as many native speakers of Swahili as the numbers you give suggest.

You have to accept Dari for Afghanistan, not just Persian Dari.

Following from Sesel, I think there are more Russian speakers in Ukraine, Lingala speakers in DRC etc. You're using official languages here, not predominant languages. Especially in Africa these are used as lingua franca so communicate with people from other parts of the country but not spoken as a main language by many people at all

I'm skeptical that there are more people for whom English is a first language than Afrikaans in South Africa.

@everyone: It's not actually native speakers, its speakers in general, whether it be a first, second, or third language.

"Farsi" is also an acceptable name for "Persian".

@aj_sp0rcle: if thats true then your numbers are off for the US. the census reports that about 96% of Americans claim to speak English very well, so that would be anywhere from 295,680,000-299,520,000 english speakers in the US.

If you accept Persian, surely Iranian and Farsi are more accurate. More people speak Zulu, Xhosa and Afrikaans than English as the main language in South Africa, and the figures for many of the other African countries are inaccurate. Many people of some knowledge of English or French in those contries but they are hardly "predominant". Indonesian and Malaysian are really dialects of the same language (Malay) as are Hindi and Urdu (Hindustani).

the language is persian not iranian. Iranian is a group of languages. and farsi is the modern day spoken persian, so maybe farsi is more accurate.

@british: I would agree that Iranian is more usually applied to the langage group. Farsi is what most of my Iranian friends and clients call the language but they also use Persian and Iranian depending on whom they are addressing.

Iranian is not a language, it is a group of languages.

@zeppelinoid: Actually I live in South Africa, and I can say with full confidence that more people can speak english than people can speak any of the languages listed there. Something to note is that most everybody learns english because of it uses where as somebody who knows Xhosa has no reason to know Zulu.

@aj_sp0rcle: Of course I am fully aware that English has the most speakers of any language in RSA. You have misread my comment. I indicated that there were other languages that have more speakers as a first language. Figures per the last available census in 2001 are: Zulu 10.6M; Xhosa 7.9M; Afrikaans 6.0M; Northern Sotho 4.2M; Tswana 3.6M; English 3.7M; Sotho 3.6; Tsonga 2.0M; Swati 1.2M; Venda 1.0M; Ndebele 0.7M; Other languages 0.2m. Total 44.8m. It was estimated in 2001 that 13.7M people were fluent English speakers of whom 10M used it as a second language.
