Wow. Got 'em all, including 6 bonus answers. The sad thing is that most of them are in the same vicinity. Hopefully, the researchers are getting closer to finding a cure. Now, if we could only find a fool proof way of stopping the spread. This is a quiz that I would rather not see, but kudos to Sporcle for helping to raise awareness that could lead to a cure.

This is a fun and yet sad quiz. It's unbelieveable to think that over a third of people in Botswana and Swaziland have AIDS. Speaking of bonus answers, though, I got ten of them. How many are there?

Wow I just came back from United Nations: World AIDS Day at Harlem and found this quiz. Nice to know people are aware of today.

Only missed Sierra Leone guessing that's the only African country I missed guessing. Found ten bonus answers: Russia, India, USA, France, Mexico, Canada, UK, Australia, Germany & China. Were there any others? Interesting but yet sad quiz realizing that there's one entire continent that's being decimated by this disease.

The thing about AIDS/HIV in these countries is it generally isn't passed on through homosexual encounters like most people imagine this disease is spread, but rather by females being gang raped and getting the infection by this means and then having sex with other people, or by having children and the child being born with it thus further spreading this pandemic.

It's not surprising that African countries dominate this list as HIV made the jump to humans in West Central Africa. Plus, African countries don't have the medical infrastructure necessary to combat the disease and the constant conflict helps spread it around rather easily. Disease almost always follows war.

It's so sad to do this quiz; I am young enough that I don't remember a time when we didn't know about this disease, but I am ashamed to admit that I didn't realize until now just how bad this pandemic is. Wow. Those poor people. Thanks, sporcle, for opening at least one pair of eyes today.

China has just 0.1% and a lot of Chinese don't have the living conditions or preventions that western countries does. How do they keep it so low? Sad but predictable that Africa would dominate this.

6 out of 20. Amazing how many African nations are on this list. I actually guessed a lot of countries that weren't in the Top 20. I was a little surprised that the U.S rate is "only" 0.8 percent, but that still means there are about 2.4 million people with HIV/AIDS. How tragic.

Life expectancies... Swaziland is 32.5 years for males. Botswana is 33.9 years. Lesotho is 35.5 years. I would be downright ancient in many of those countries. By comparison, Haiti is 51 years and Sierra Leone is 57. Angola isn't even on this list with its 4% AIDS rate, and the life expectancy there is 37.3 years.

@ Matt8204 I actually thought the percentage was quite high for the United States so I checked the source and the correct answer is 0,6%. That difference adds up to 600,000 fewer people with HIV/AIDS in the United States.

I love how in this quiz, when you check the answers the ones you picked turn green. That's such a great effect, I wish it could be implemeted in every quiz on the site!

@redalert: The most common way that HIV/AIDS is transmitted throughout the world is through heterosexual sex. Although the disease first came to prominence in the west in gay men, heterosexual women are actually most at risk. The AIDS pandemic in Africa isn't caused by gang rapes — it's mainly passed on by people in ordinary, consensual, heterosexual relationships who don't know they have the disease and infect their partners (note that, if 30% of your population has the disease, there's a 42% chance that a randomly chosen man and woman will consist of one person with AIDS and one without; the latter is then very likely to catch the disease from his or her partner). Mother-to-child transmission is also a major vector. There is some hope, though: I heard a documentary on the BBC World Service yesterday that said that heavy use of anti-retrovirals during pregnancy can reduce the chance of a child catching AIDS from his or her mother to around 10%, which is still high but much better than the case without the drugs.

This is so sad, but thank you for making this. I think when you put a location and a percentage to the disease, it makes it more real. I hope more people are inspired to help.

@WarioBro: I refer you to the comment before the comment before yours. Once a quiz is published, there's no way for its author to find out what the bonuses are, short of asking the admins. I wrote this quiz about three weeks ago so I've forgotten what the bonuses were.
