	Before commenting, please bear in mind that all top-100 movies lists are rubbish because they never include your favourite and they always include that one you hate. :-)

	I love this one. It's been a while since we had a really good movie quiz. Maybe top 20 money-grossers of the 00's is due, with udpates as new movies come out?

	One thing you might want to note (although it should be obvious with AFI). There are no foreign films in this list. Would have saved mea little time going in.

	Excellent quiz, even if the list is as poor as one would expect from the AFI. Although it is most definitely a major improvement on the abysmal 1997 version. It's pleasing to see the likes of "Vertigo", "City Lights" and "Raging Bull" make significant gains, and the nod to the marvelous Preston Sturges and his best film is wonderful. I figured it'd be fun if we all picked our own faves from this 100. I've been (un)fortunate enough to see all of these, and I imagine I'd settle for something that looked like: 1. Sunrise (1927), 2. Citizen Kane (1941), 3. City Lights (1931), 4. Raging Bull (1980), 5. Vertigo (1958), 6. Sullivan's Travels (1941), 7. Sunset Blvd. (1950), 8. The Godfather/Part II (1972/74), 9. Bringing Up Baby (1938), 10. Casablanca (1942), 11. The Wild Bunch (1969), 12. The Best Years of Our Lives (1946), 13. The Gold Rush (1925), 14. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), 15. Chinatown (1974), 16. King Kong (1933), 17. Duck Soup (1933), 18. Do the Right Thing (1989), 19. Taxi Driver (1976), 20. The Philadelphia Story (1940). What about everyone else? As much as I consider this to be an inaccurate representation of the quality of American filmmaking during the past century, I must admit that it works well as a fairly useful guide to novices looking to broaden their interests in American cinema.

	I wish AFI would give a little more credit to movies made in the last 20 years. Maybe consider posting the IMDb top 100, which is objective but gives credit where it is due and not just to old filmmakers. http://www.imdb.com/chart/top Could always use the top box office grosses from that site too.

	In all fairness, most recent movies are omitted from the list because they haven't had enough time to appreciate. We all know Casablanca is a classic, but we still need to wait and see if films like Crash, Million Dollar Baby, and A Beautiful Mind will be as monumental in the future as they were when they were released. Give it another ten, twenty, or thirty years; the paradigm will shift. Besides, 11 of the films that made the list were from the 90's; that's 11 percent representing the most recent decade.

	Some of these are on the list because of the subject matter. The movie Sunrise is about a farmer that leaves his wife to have an affair with a woman if questionable reputation and then 'repents' his decision. Very racy stuff for the 1920's

	Even though I wrote the quiz, I'm not a big fan of their list. In fact, I've only seen 29 of the films. There are several on there I'd like to see, but I just never get around to it.

	I've seen 44 films on the list, but not some of the films considered all-time classics like "Gone With the Wind," "Lawrence of Arabia" or "Singing In the Rain."

	Yuck, I've seen 35; and I considered myself a movie buff. I need to watch more TCM channel. I will remedy that this Winter thanks to the economy and $9.75 movie theatre prices.

	Yea...i haven't seen a lot of these movies. But, thanks to Netflix, i have made it my mission to see 99 of the AFI top 100 this winter.(I refuse to ever watch Titanic. It may be a good movie, but when it came out and i had to hear that stupid Celine Dion song over and over, i made a promise to myself that i will NEVER see that movie, and i need to stick to my guns)

	I feel horrible about this, because I took this quiz with about 6-8 of my fellow classics grad students looking on, and we still only got about 60. In any case, I like this list immensely, although I've only seen 39. @bujumbo: I refuse to do what you ask. I agree that their should be foreign films as well, and I was alarmed at how few (i.e. 1) Universal monster movies there were. Surely "Dracula", "Frankenstein", "Bride of Frankenstein" and "The Invisible Man" deserve a nod?

	The problem with using the IMDB charts, as someone mentioned above, is that they are always changing, so you'd have to update the quiz on a regular basis.

	@Hal_10000: Why is it be "obvious" that the AFI would ignore all films made outside the USA? They say on their website that their goal is to "[provide] leadership in screen education and the recognition and celebration of excellence in the art of film, television and digital media." I actually find it quite shocking that an organization with those goals should be so incredibly insular.

	davidr: ...because they're the 'American' Film Institute? "The American Film Institute was founded in 1967 as a national arts organization to train filmmakers and preserve America's vanishing film heritage. The National Endowment for the Arts and Humanities recommended creating AFI as a nonprofit "to enrich and nurture the art of film in America" with initial funding from the NEA, the Motion Picture Association of America and the Ford Foundation."

	@Lindsay: "The art of film in America" not "the art of American film". The Oscars aren't only awarded to American films. In a related field, the US National Gallery of Art contains many works by non-American artists.

	Ah. In fact the point is that this isn't the "AFI's top 100 movies": it's the 2007 revision list of the greatest American movies, the first version of which was released to celebrate the centenary of the American movie industry. Fair enough.

	Mr. T- absolutely I would say that. Get past the epic movies and look at substance. Movies like Gandhi, Patton, Amadeus etc. are typically overrated because of their massive scope and massive hype. The Apartment is a brilliantly scripted and brilliantly acted movie that I can watch again and again. I actually like most of your suggestions. It was other commenters suggesting "The Outsiders" and "Hoosiers" to replace some classics. Most of your suggestions were very good. Just lay off "The Apartment"!!!!
