Katharine Hepburn and Paul Newman, though, are particularly striking omissions because they both were around for a long time after it was obvious they were deserving of one (Hepburn could have been given one the first year), and neither was overwhelmingly unpopular in Hollywood like Brando. Hepburn died in 2003 - they couldn't have given one to her rather than Ford orStreisand or Hoffman or Hanks, all of whom were in no danger of dying before they had a chance to give them an award? And Newman is even more ridiculous, although I guess they gave the award to Beatty in March of last year, before it was publicly known that Newman was sick. But still...you should always go for the qualified person most likely to die before you get another chance to give it out. That Tom Hanks and George Lucas have them is particularly ridiculous. |
