People seem to have largely forgotten, but this "theme" was first off a top 40 song. "Thank You For Being A Friend" by Andrew Gold reached #25 in 1978, seven years before The Golden Girls debuted. Andrew also had a top 10 hit with Lonely Boy and contributed background vocals and played on many of Linda Ronstadt's biggest hits.
Andrew's mother was Marni Nixon, whom you've probably never heard of, but if you've seen West Side Story or My Fair Lady, that's Marni's voice you hear on the songs, not Natalie Wood or Audrey Hepburn.
