Remember me? I'm the guy who, when people complain about how bad music is these days, argues that people have been saying that for decades if not centuries. That pop music these day has the about the same level of great, mediocre, and awful songs as any other time.
I still believe that.
But I also believe that in the 50 odd years I've been listening to pop music this is undoubtedly the worst song to ever reach #1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Oh, there have been other bad songs. Lots of them. "Disco Duck", "Mr. Custer", "Crack A Bottle", "Do I Make You Proud", that completely wacky "Baby I Love Your Way / Freebird" medley by Will To Power that proved the sum could be less than either of the parts.
But to me this tuneless, witless, repugnant song tops, or perhaps bottoms them all.
