	The united kingdom is england, sweden, wales, and northern ireland together. Before 1707 those particular four countries were not united. Either it was England by itself or Great Britain(Without Northern Ireland), or something else.

	Did you miss Ethiopia/Abyssinia? And what exactly is the criteria for "for a while did not exist"? Hungary did not exist from 1526 - 1867 (assuming you count the Dual Monarchy as an 'independent' Hungary), Mongolia did not exist as an independent entity from the 18th Century to 1911 under the Qing Dynasty. Yet Poland, which 'only' lost its independence for about 100 years from 1795 - 1918, is not on the list.

	England was a predecessor state to the UK; Castile/Leon was a predecessor state to Spain. I think the originating dates for those two countries should probably go back to the foundation of the original polities.

	@profxyz - I'd say it's more accurate to say either that Hungary "did not exist" from 1526 to 1918 or that it "did not exist" from 1849 to 1867. From 1526 to 1849, Hungary was a distinct political entity ruled by a monarch who happened to rule other territories as well. I don't see a major difference between the pre-1849 and post-1867 situations, except that post-1867 all the other Habsburg lands were now joined together in a way they hadn't been before. Hungary's own constitutional position was not theoretically all that different from what it had been before the revolution of 1848, although obviously in practice there was far more self-government.

	If you consider Austria/Hungary as independent for so long, you should actually count Russia too.

	Russia should definitely be on this list. The Tsardom of Russia was established in 1547 and by 1700 had expanded to cover all of its modern territory except the far eastern reaches. Also, I agree with profxyz and johnlk.

	As far as I am concerned, about.com is a pretty reliable source. The meaning of the "same country" might be disputed. For example, the people's republic of china is from the twentieth century where as the ruling dynasty system in china is much older. Another example is the Margravate of Austria established a while before the system of government used today was established. Even france went through many changes. All in all, what my quiz and about.com are saying is that we rank if there was ever an indpendent nation on a ceartain piece of land. (The borders could have slighthly changes of course)

	Scotland is not a country and england is hardly an earlier version of the uk and the uk has so much more land area than england.

	it should not be "independence". For example, Hungary's 1001 is considered the foundation because on that date (allegedly) the king converted to christianism. But the Magyars already occupied the territory and were organized. So they didn't become independent from anybody else. In any case, they became dependent to the papacy

	same case for Spain, the peninsula was conquered in the 15th century, and Portugal became independent from Spain much later (though it existed before, they didn`t independize (wrong word, I'm sure) from anybody. Except, maybe, roman empire, but in that case most western europe should be sixth century)

	Counting Sweden from 1523 doesn't make any more sense than counting Denmark from 1945.
