First, I would love to see the source. Second, wouldn't a nation in Year 1 be, like, Assyria (as opposed to current nations)?

@Kicking222: My source is a book, "The Atlas of the Real World: Mapping the Way We Live". As for the modern/ancient nations question, I put into this quiz what was in the book; maybe they take the populations as if they were for modern-day borders. If anyone has a good idea on this, let me know.

I liked it! Amazing how much some countries have grown, most of that being in the last 150 years or so; modern science, take a bow.

Really interesting quiz. From the title I was expecting to name Roman empire etc. but this turned out to be just as interesting.

^ seconded. Very interesting idea, but awkward to actually make into a quiz.

It would be cool with the nations of the time, but i'd argue it's more fun this way considering that after China, Rome, and Japan I'd probably be done.

Interesting, although some of the absences are surprising. Iraq didn't have 2 million people?

Perhaps you should change the title of the quiz to specify what you mean, or explain in the first comment. Also, how do you specify nation, or how did the authors of your book? Some of those countries didn't exist in Year 1, ergo there were no "nations", and especially not in modern sense of the word. If you mean the number of people living in the territories of these modern countries, then the term 'nation' applies here even less. But a good idea nonetheless!

I find it very hard to believe that in AD 1. the territories of modern-day France, Spain and Algeria had more people than the territories of modern-day Egypt, Syria and Tunisia at that time.

Acp39, do you realize that Egypt is on the quiz, and higher on the list than Algeria?

@thenastyaetolian: I've explained this puzzle a little clearer in the added note at the top of the page (5th bullet).

@thenasty...whatever your handle is...you are a huge tool. Never, EVER, use "ergo" in a comment again. I hope you read this and use it to realize the changes you need to make in your life to be able to talk to a member of the opposite sex.

This quiz was fun! It makes you have to think harder to place nations in their ancient borders.

I thought it was a lot of fun, too. I was surprised Greece wasn't there.

WorldWhiz- if you want to be able to list a source for a book, one way to do so is to link the Amazon.com (or other online bookseller) page for that book. In this case, it's: http://www.amazon.com/Atlas-Real-World-Mapping-Second/dp/0500288534/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1276113050&sr=8-2

I think it's incredibly difficult for any source to REALLY have an estimate as to how many people lived in different places, especially in places like Brazil, USA, Canada, Indonesia, Australia. I don't know how convinced I am by these numbers...

@acp39: it makes perfect sense that the territories of modern-day France and Spain had more people in AD 1 than Tunisia and Algeria.

I don't see how it's even vaguely possible that France had more people than Egypt.
