| Of the US places, New York, Philadelphia, Boston, and Washington were all in the 13 original colonies (although Washington didn't exist as its own city at the time). Chicago, Atlanta, Detroit, and Minneapolis were in the largely unsettled territory that came under British control after 1763 but was ceded to the new United States in 1783. Miami, as part of Spanish Florida, was likewise ceded to the British in 1763, but given back to Spain in 1783. Seattle was part of the Oregon Country, which was under joint British and U.S. sovereignty until it was partitioned in 1846. |
