I would argue that "The Passion" falls under the umbrella of adaptations. Regardless of your personal beliefs, it takes a part of the Bible - a written work - and uses that as the plotline. Feel free to disagree.

Titanic, Butch Cassidy, Cleopatra, and The Bells of St. Mary's are based on real events or people. Love Story is an adaptation of a novel. The Lion King is an allegory for Hamlet, if not a direct adaptation.

Fixed Love Story, but movies based on historical events are considered original in my book. And Lion King is barely analogous to Hamlet. I don't remember the scene when Simba stabs Zazu or when he orders the murder of Timon and Pumba.

I realize the gross is still growing, but Avatar belongs here.
