	New Mexico and California were the names of the regions that the US gained by (pointlessly) invading Mexico in the late 1840s.

	True, Alta California and Nuevo Mexico were occupied by the U.S. in 1846. But, they were not annexed until the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848.

	Great quiz. Though I'm not sure "ceded" is the right word to use for the first answer. Also, it's debatable, but I'd argue that the final decision about the Maine/New Brunswick border should be included: http://www.upperstjohn.com/history/northeastborder.htm Granted, if you go by the original US claim, we "lost" territory, but we never had control over the full claim. And in Britain's eyes, it was conceding territory. So I think it qualifies as an official "acquisition."

	Good point. I had thought about Maine/New Brunswick, but figured that it was more of a clarification of the terms of the 1783 treaty. In any event, I wanted to keep the answers just to the "official" government site.

	We lease Guantanamo Bay; the Treasury Department sends Cuba a check for $4,085 every year. Of course, Castro hasn't cashed the checks since 1959.

	The Alaska boundary dispute (settled in 1903) and the Northwest Angle (settled 1925) also arguably added territory to the US. Also, make it so that Wake will be accepted without having to type the word "island". Also, for Mexican Session, perhaps allow South-West or US South-West, or have it come up with California.
