	Odd. South Dakota already has 815,000 and the growth...isolated to mainly the Sioux Falls area and the Rapid City/Black Hills isn't expected to slow down in the coming decades. Goes to show how far off that table is. It'll be interesting to see the projections after the 2010 data comes out.

	Perhaps in 2030 the District of Columbia will be a state. Or Puerto Rico. Nah, they would have said that in 1990 about 2010 and we'll say it again in 2030 about 2050.

	Fear of global warming is not driving any significant population trends in Florida (Why would it? That would be like people leaving Washington/Oregon because they have volcanoes!) That said, these figures are based on trends in which Florida had explosive growth, adding almost 400,000 people a year. That kind of growth rate was built on speculative construction and very unstable ground and was doomed to end at any moment. And it already has. The economy and mortgage crisis hit Florida hard (and it deserved it, being a huge contributor to the problems that caused it.) It saw an actual loss in domestic net migration in the past couple of years, so don't count on that 28 million figure anytime soon.

	Yea, I'd take these population projections with a huge grain of salt. I know these projections were put out by the U.S. Census, but I find it hard to believe that the states of Arizona and Nevada are going to add 5,755,636 people (combined). That is 62.3% more people than they have now. With issues supplying water to their existing residents, and water shortages projected to get worse, I don't see how they can add nearly 6,000,000 more people in 20 years.

	@mjones34: Doubled since when? The current (2009 estimated) metro population is 562,906. It has only doubled if to go back to 1940, when the population was 269,914.

	This data probably came out before the economic crisis. They should redo it now. Great quiz nonetheless

	@coulraphobic Those two areas populations might be growing but the rest of the state is losing just as fast. Same can be said for North Dakota where Fargo and Bismarck are growing but the rest of the state is losing people hand over fist. But if the oil continues to boom in the western part of ND that trend might change.

	I don't know who calculated this. It's basically the same as current population plus big jumps for Nevada and Arizona. However, some states the trends aren't being considered enough. Indiana has been dropping, yet it still manages to stay that high in 40 years?

	California is going bankrupt, and is increasing its energy prices. No way it gains more people than Texas.

	It's interesting to look at these projections, though even moreso than with traditional population projections these are not to be trusted. Taking a snapshot growth rate during a period of massive [over]construction will invariably skew the results. Not to mention, demographic shifts are not always predictable (e.g. the movement to the Sun Belt in the past 40-50 years).
