Since Washington has only 61 square miles of land, it's not at all surprising that Ottawa, with 1,073 mi² has a larger population. However, if you look at the metro area, Washington is way ahead, with about 5.3 million people against about 1.1 million. To my mind, the urban or metro area is a much better guide: if you ask people what the population of New York is, they'll quote 18 or 19 million, not the 8.3 million living within the city limits. |
