Pittsburgh is misspelled. Not really, but if I convince myself of it, I might be able to personally justify missing it. Good quiz.

Like that, although loads that I'd never heard of! You have got ranks 8 & 9 the wrong way round though.

Just 1 in 200 got what was once the 12th largest city in the US. 150+ years of annexation sure can lead to complete obscurity.

You have Petersburg (#50) listed as being in Pennsylvania, but it's in Virgina (see your source.)

@Flick: speaking of singing, it seems those Cleveland tourism video guys lied to me. I thought it was "under construction since 1868"!

These old population quizzes fascinate me to no end. It's just interesting to see how some cities seem to spring up overnight and others that were once big players are now an afterthought.

Couldn't the next census results be used for a sporcle quiz sooner than 160 years from now?

No cities (besides San Francisco) west of the Mississippi. Wonder if anyone was living in the now top 10 cities of Houston, Dallas, Los Angeles, San Diego, San Antonio, and Phoenix then.

Yay! I love these historical population quizes! It's fun to try to remember ... "now who had heavy industry, who's near a big river, who's on the coast" ... if you think about the means of freight transport back then (train, riverboat, canal barge, etc.) it helps fill a lot of these in. What? Too nerdy?

@dje Nothing. Nothing at all happens when you type in Kyrgyzstan, as it is not one of the 50 most populous cities in the United States in the year 1850.

@Geo_Crazy: Lafayette and St Louis are both west of the Mississippi. (Though the St Louis urban area now spans both sides of the river, the actual city is on the west bank.)
