| I enjoy quizzes like this, because for some reason, I'm a population junkie. lol Most people on here use the standard MSA statistics for their quizzes. Those stats are fine, but are generally confusing because of all the different categories the US Census bureau has created to define areas. If you look at the NYC area, it was first started as NY/NJ and later adding on CT. It wasn't until the last 10 years or so that PA was included. Anyone reading that Wiki source may have to reread it several times to understand what they are saying. :) The Census Bureau uses different factors when figuring out a statistical area. One of them is the number of people commuting from one area to the main city. For example, Trenton, NJ. Why is that in the NYC metro and not in with Philadelphia? Part of it is also county lines. It's much easier to use county lines than it is township, boroughs, or city lines. Look at San Bernardino county in CA's LA area. Needles, which sits on the Colorado River across from AZ and just south of NV, is still considered part of the LA area because it's in SB county. LA is 256 miles from Needles and Las Vegas is 110...which one would you travel to? But just because a corner of SB county is within the LA metro area, the entire county is included in the population.
Ok...I don't know where I was going with this, but the US Census bureau needs a kick in the ass for contributing to the confusion in Sporcle quizzes! :) lol |
