The North Korean government allows and subsidises Buddhism, Taoism and I also beleive they subsidise Confucianism to give an image of religious freedom, whereas most other religions are clamped down upon. Therefore, many North Korean citizens only have these three options to choose from when it comes to religion (unless they become atheist / non-religious) and sometimes choose all three, as many adherents of Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism beleive that all three religions are linked and form one 'Great Religion'. Therefore, North Korean numbers do look high. That be said, the Songun government of North Korea never gives an exact number of religious adherents to a particular religion, hence the 'approx.'.
