	I had no idea that elephants were that widespread - thought they were pretty much confined to India and East Central Africa. Didnt think they were in places like Vietnam and Nigeria.

	Yeah, I just made a bunch of animal quizzes and was surprised how much I learned about each of them. I'm still surprised by the Iranian cheetahs.

	Love these quizzes. What surprised me most was the range of the leapoard. I knew they were found in the Middle East but I had no idea their range extended to the Korean peninsula and all the way down to Singapore. Also, poor Lesotho, it doesn't seem to have any wildlife whatsoever. In all of these quizzes it either doesn't appear or appears in the extinct column.

	How does South Africa have elephants and Lesotho not have them? That's just boggling.

	@cardspartan For whatever reason, I've noticed that Lesotho isn't mentioned by the IUCN reports very often. It does seen that elephants must have roamed there in the past. I suspect they may just lump it in with South Africa some of the time. Also, perhaps the most depressing about making these quizzes is looking at the range maps. It is shocking how little of South Africa (which many of us in the US have been brought up to think of as a wildlife Mecca) is still habitat for these species. I believe the leopard still has considerable presence, but most of these other species are confined to the northern fringes of the country.

	@TreehuggnCowgirl: That's because those species are confined to the tropical parts of South Africa: KwaZulu Natal and Mpumalanga. There is so much bush and wildlife there, it IS a wildlife mecca! But the rest of the country is Cape, which is not suitable for elephants and rhinos and the like, but is fine for leopards. It's only because of habitat! South Africa has preserved its wildlife very well, especially in the last 20 years. I wish India could be more like that... here we have a real poaching problem.

	But there are also elephants and lions near Port Elizabeth on the southern coast! I'm not saying South Africa isn't working to manage their wildlife, but "troublesome" species like lions and elephants are almost entirely confined to protected areas or private game reserves. It's the price they pay for being developed. Elephants and croplands don't mix too well.

	If you want to include a recently extinct (Roman times) variety of elephant, there is the North African Elephant with a different range from the two given species: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_African_Elephant.
