They do it all the time on ESPN and everywhere else, so it's understandable, but this is an incorrect use of overall. #1 overall describes only one person in each draft - the first person taken. It distinguishes the very first pick from the other first round picks. Any other usage is meaningless.
For example, Peyton Manning and Darrelle Revis were both #1 picks, but only Peyton was #1 overall. To say Revis was the Jets' first overall pick means exactly the same thing as just saying he was the Jets' first pick. Commentators do this all the time, but that doesn't mae it correct. |
