| johnik: as a German speaker, I wouldn't say that Luxembourgish is more different from Standard German than Swiss German is. The thing is, German-speaking Switzerland (and Liechtenstein) officially uses standard German (with some Swiss peculiarities though) as its written language and the German dialects spoken in Switzerland are generally classified as a variant of German by linguists, whereas Luxembourgish is normally classified as an independent (Germanic) language with its own writing system, ALTHOUGH this writing system is not official (there is no official single ortography for the Luxembourgish language, which is why they normally write in French or German in official contexts, although Luxembourgish is written in all other situations (just think off e-mails, letters, Facebook, etc.).
Then again, some Luxembourgers DO have French or German as their mother tongue. The linguistic situation there is interesting to say the least.
