| @ProfundoQ: Actually, you're wrong about the numbers. There was no Martin II or III, but there was a Martin IV (who was actually Martin II). The confusion originated because of a pair of Popes named Marinus. At the time of Simon de Brion's (or de Brie) election to the Papacy in 1281, there was an error in the official Papal records regarding the Popes Marinus (the Latin version of Martin is "Martinus") so that when Simon chose "Martinus" for his Papal name, the official record showed there to be 3 earlier Popes named "Martinus." |
