Great quiz. I'm sure someone will come along and say it's Amerocentric, but I think most of the topics are well-chosen (even though a lot of them are U.S. specific). I will say that this quiz probably only needs about 15 minutes.

Thanks fm_. I tried to provide some measure of international balance, since I realize that sporcle.com has an international audience. Undoubtedly, though, there is a bit of an American slant to the choice of categories. What can I say, I'm an American born and raised. It would be cool if someone from a different part of the world made a similar kind of quiz reflecting his/her experiences and world view. I'd enjoy the challenge of taking that quiz. Cheers.

As a New Zealander, I didn't find it TOO americo-centric. All of them should be managable except the speaker/chief justice on the whole.

But I do have probably a better knowledge of american sports than your average overseas person. I think NBA and MLB have the biggest following, NHL in europe. NFL not so much. Anyway, 5 stars from me, you deserve it.

Nice overall, but I can't say I'm a big fan of requiring roman numerals and it sure looks like time magazine got lazy in 2006.

The last 2 categories (bottom middle and right) are really lame inclusions.

@betraisefold: I never thought of not using Roman numerals, since that's how I always see the names of monarchs and popes written. However, I've added the Arabic numeral versions as alternatives. @pita: I tried to include something for everyone in choosing the categories. Your least favorite categories are probably someone else's favorite categories. But thanks for sharing your thoughts and for trying to help make this a better quiz.

Great quiz! I would suggest allowing Bill Gates, Melinda Gates or Bono for the 05 person of the year, but otherwise it was fantastic.

I find it amusing that Matthew McConaughey is the least guessed answer. Can we take this as a sign that he needs to disappear of the face of the earth? Any takers?

Jordin Sparks's name is spelled wrong.

You need to accept last names as answers. Some of the names didn't get accepted unless I typed in the ENTIRE name. And the only reason Matthew McConaughey is not guessed often is because his name is so damn hard to spell!

Thank god I don't have to be the first person to note Jordin Sparks's name being misspelled. Or rather, thank alanna82. Otherwise I would feel the fool among sporclers... And why do I have such a hard time remembering Oscar winners when I watch the show every year?

@alanna82: Thanks for the correction; it's now fixed. Can you give me an example of names that required the entire name? I just looked at the data, and I'm pretty sure I accepted last names as an alternative answer for all people on the quiz. If I've overlooked any, I'd like to know. Thanks.

not entirely sure, are your dates for the oscars out by a year?
TimeAndTide

@stuki: The year associated with an Oscar-winner is the year in which the movie came out, not the year in which the Oscar was awarded. So, for example, Slumdog Millionaire, a 2008 movie, won the 2008 Oscar for Best Picture in February 2009. Hope that helps.

smarty - Chief Justices and Speakers are damned near impossible for anyone who IS from the USA. I'm American and I got all of the UK Monarchs, PMs, Secretaries of the UN and Israeli PMs, but knew only one or two Justices/Speakers. Great quiz, though!

Vlad: that was the year that sites like youtube rose to prominence, and when the magazine came out, it had a glossy, mirror-like cover on it, so that when you looked in the mirror you saw yourself. Basically they were saying that everyone won. Even you. We've all been Time's Person of the Year now.

Enjoyable, well-balanced quiz, even for a non-USA person. Ok, I only remembered one of each this time but names of US chief justices and speakers crop up often enough in serious news for Europeans to have a fair chance. North American sports are much harder!
