Some surprises in the book category: "On Beauty" over "White Teeth," "Zeitoun" (I think my closest guess was "Zhentoin") over "A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius." (Also a reminder that I really need to memorize all those Harry Potter titles. I could only come up with four, and "Goblet of Fire" was not among them.)

Yeah, I've read AHWOSG and You Shall Know Our Velocity, but I was unaware of Zeitoun's existence! Also, I forgot the "Amazing" in Kavalier and Clay. Happy to see Cat Power made the list... You Are Free is a great album.

Nice quiz, but EW's choices for best movies of the decade are terrible. Gladiator, Moulin Rouge, LotR, Dark Knight, 40-Year-Old Virgin, all overrated in my opinion, with the first two bordering on unwatchable. Nice TV list, though... especially Gilmore Girls, Arrested Development and the Office.

Goblet of Fire has no business up at number eight. The best of this decade's Potters, but not even close to being one of the decade's top books. Even in the young-adult-fantasy genre.

Their Movies list is laughable. No foreign language films? GLADIATOR? Absolute shameful crap. But what more can you expect from EW...

Great quiz, but I typed in "Kavalier and Clay" and didn't get credit ... pretty chintzy. EW is decent for movies, but a little shaky on TV and books, and simply dreadful on music. I canceled my subscription when their "Bullsye" page dissed OutKast and gave props to Kelly Clarkson.

Gladiator may not really be among the top ten films of the decade, but it is neither "unwatchable" nor "shameful crap". In fact, it is quite a good movie if you like that sort of thing (i.e. good movies).

No, it's not unwatchable, neither is it shameful crap. The list itself is what's shameful crap.

can we accept just "harry potter"? Who the hell knows which book EW liked the most? Anyway they just named "Lord of the Rings" even though that's 3 movies so I don't see why they had to pick 1 harry potter book

Good to see The Wire and Arrested Development on the list as the clear best drama and comedy series of the decade.

Never even heard of most of those books, and the TV has some dire choices on it... but that's EW's fault. Quiz itself is ok.

I've never heard of any of the books except Harry Potter, or even their authors. Am I uncultured or are these really obscure books?

@Chris, I'm with you except for The Road - the only other book I've heard of on that list. Film's are basically a top-grossing of the decade list - with the nice bonus of Almost Famous. TV list isn't bad as it recognises The Wire and Arrested Development. The West Wing is sorely lacking however.

Wait, can somebody please tell me why, for albums, we're guessing the artist instead of the album? The list isn't "top ten artists of the decade", so why are we guessing artists? What's the difference between that and guessing the authors from their books (instead of the other way around, which is the correct way)? Otherwise, this was a fine quiz, but that just struck me as incredibly odd and nonsensical.

Wait, why again is this such a horrible list? I don't see that much wrong with it. Sure, it's a little mainstream (not that there's anything wrong with that at all), but in general I see pretty much the same choices that every other best of the decade list has, especcially in the music section (except Beyonce that is). TV has captured 7 critically acclaimed shows, movies are all good although maybe not everyone's choices, but it's only one magazine's opinion. Just cause you don't agree doesn't mean it's a terrible list. I don't think I've ever seen a 'best of' list that people haven't criticized; guess it's human nature to complain.

Lost in translation should be on a worst movies list. I saw an interview with Sofia Coppola and she even said that it was meant to be boring. That was the whole point, to show how bored he was and make everyone know it. I hate those self important directors. One of the few movies that I have ever walked out on. And as far as LOTRs and Harry Potter, I suppose they are good movies for the genre (kids movies), but they really aren't something you can judge fairly against a movie like "No country for old men". Just my opinion.

Moulin Rouge is one of the worst films I've ever had the unpleasant experience to sit through. Two points. I get violent every time I hear "Your Song" by Elton John and I have the image of Jim Broadbent singing "Like A Virgin" tatooed on my brain. I went to see that movie in the rain and I bent my umbrella from constantly gripping it every time I cringed.

With very few exceptions, this list is garbage, like EW itself. For anyone who thinks they are lacking for not being familiar with most of the things on this list, relax. What you're actually doing is feeling bad that you're not an idiot.

@Meltedman: Lost in Translation is one of the best movies made in recent years! Just because you don't like the director doesn't mean you should hate the movie too, it's a fantastic movie that deserves more recognition than it has been getting.

I'm not sure what some people are complaining about - Gladiator is better than Brokeback Mountain at least! Surprised about some of the TV choices - and especially that American Idol beat Pop Idol (the original UK version) when Simon Cowell's the name listed - true that it's produced longer-lasting stars but that's not the quality of TV..?
