In the middle of the 19th century, the Danube had only five countries in its basin: Austria-Hungary, the German, Russian, and Ottoman Empires, and Montenegro.

The Missouri-Mississippi, Yenisei, Yangtze, and Huang He are 4 of the 6 longest rivers in the world and yet the drainage basins are each in only 1 or 2 countires. In comparsion, the Daube is the 30th longest river and drains 19 nations.

@Dralcoffin: wouldn't part of the basin have been in Switzerland then? And apparently Montenegro didn't gain full independence from the Ottoman Empire until the 1878 Congress of Berlin - the same time as Serbia and Romania.

@handlehandle: Ah, thanks for the catch on Switzerland; I forgot about the Inn basin reaching the Swiss. Also, Montenegro's independence was a bit fuzzy on Wiki, so just swap Switzerland and Montenegro, to still have a quarter of the modern countries.
