| @DenverDucks: Regarding the 2nd part of your comment, that's one of the reasons that the tradition of giving nicknames to athletes has kind of faded away. Most nicknames today are either lazy, pointless, or recycled ones. For example, Fisk was called Pudge, and then I guess Ivan reminded people of Fisk, so they called him Pudge. So now there's a generation of people who think of Rodriguez and not Fisk. What's interesting is that when I was first becoming a fan both Gary Carter and Carlton Fisk were still playing, and yet at that time the players referred to as "the kid" and "pudge" were Junior Griffey and Ivan Rodriguez respectively. I didn't know Fisk was Pudge until years later and I honestly did not know Carter was named "The Kid" until he died. |
