Kinda sad that the lowest rank word on this quiz is "Scatterlings", since it was a record called "Scatterlings of Africa" by Johnny Clegg and Juluka that largely inspired Paul Simon to go to South Africa to record the Graceland album. Clegg was the first white artist to work with and incorporate Zulu rhythms and chants into pop music. If you like the music of Graceland, give Scatterlings of Africa a try.

I was always bothered by the fact that there doesn't seem to be any overlap between the people you could call Betty and the people who would make good bodyguards.

All this time I thought she was a "fat-faced" girl. Sorry, bat-faced girl.

I thought black-faced...Please accept "beer" and "belly" for "beerbelly", and "bone" and "digger" for "bonedigger"

What about accepting, "Whoa" for "Woe?" I didn't realize he was lamenting his long nights; I always thought he was just making, you know, a comment about them.

There are some issues here with compound words. For example you have 'bat-faced' and 'long-lost' as two separate words, but 'beerbelly' and 'bonediggers' as one. I got 'beer-belly' with the hyphen, but it wouldn't give me 'bone-diggers' unless I wrote it without the hyphen.

I didn't appreciate being penalized for writing out "mister", but there are well over 200 very good words here to make up for any such trifles.

Thanks for that comment, rockgolf! It was Graceland that got me interested in Johnny Clegg (whom I've now seen live about 15 times, on three different continents) and South African music in general, which then led me to live and work in SA for a while. Thanks also to Tahnan for this quiz... this has always been my favorite song on Graceland.

@rockgolf: I'd always assumed it was "scatterings," and from the looks of it I'm not the only one. My music trivia fails, here—which is a shame, since Graceland and Rhythm of the Saints helped define my childhood.

Huh - I had no idea he was saying "bonedigger" there. It might be nice if alternate spellings of roly-poly were accepted. I had to look that one up.

I was pretty sure it was "pout-faced girl." Although bat face is an amazing insult that I'd love a chance to use!

Great song, brilliant lyrics and phrasing. I love how he says there were "hints and allegations"- the rest of that phrase is usually "and things left unsaid" - and he doesn't say that part.

KMSP, Channel 9 in Minneapolis-St. Paul, did a parody of the video for "You Can Call Me Al" as a TV commercial for their station in the late '80s-early '90s.

That whole verse about cartoon graveyards, bonediggers, dogs, mutts, and beerbelly was completely alien to me. I never knew what he was talking about in that portion of the song.
