Typing in "and" gives you Yugoslavia as a bonus. Might want to get that fixed.

Belgium, Czechoslovakia and Latvia are the other bonuses

@dje: Not sure if they have participated in all or not, but I'm pretty sure technically they wouldn't be the same country and therefore wouldn't be a possible answer.

Typically, Russia 'inherits' the USSR's stats (legitimized by the fact that the UN recognizes Russia as the SU's successor state). But I looked it up and the Soviets didn't compete until 56' so they missed a few.

@johnjf- true, even though theyre not the same country, a lot of quizzes on sporcle groups things like that together, for example "world cup host countries" have germany/west germany grouped together. (which also makes me wonder if germany has participated in every olympics too!). and @riko, yeah so it shocks me that the USSR didnt start competing until so late. communism at its best.

belgium is a bonus... the notation say that they competed in the first winter olympics, but missed 60 and 68... wouldn't that mean that they have not competed in all of the olympics?

@gscott13 I think the bonuses are those who competed in the first Winter Olympics and most subsequent ones, but missed a few. Same with Latvia. Whereas many quizzes use bonuses for "missed on a technicality" answers, this one uses them for "close but no cigar" answers. Works well for this very good quiz.

I think this quiz is really good. The bonuses were added to show countries that have dissolved or broke apart and did not compete in every Winter Olympics.

@dje: Germany wasn't invited to Chamonix 24 and St. Moritz 48 because of the Wars.

According to Wikipedia, the USSR/Russia didn't compete in the Winter Olympics until 1956 in Italy. That means they missed the first six Winter Olympics.

I'm still surprised when people guess Austria and not Hungary but over double guessed the former compared to the latter. Granted that Austria is more Alpine but Hungary has always remained close and participates in very similar events? Just not sure why people have had that problem guessing one, to be honest. And yes, I know this is going to get voted down, but I thought I'd pose the question anyway.

Didn't the USA miss the 1980 games because they boycotted? So technically shouldn't they be a bonus as well?

the USA missed the 1980 games. so did many other western countries. However, that was the summer olympics. this quiz is about the winter olympics.

I think United Kingdom should be accepted for Great Britain, since that's how it's entered in the other sporcle games.

@wynne: Those were the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, not the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York.

@kypz: I think it has to do with the dividing line between East and West Europe. People (myself included) probably assumed that each of the Eastern bloc nations missed an Olympics at some point. That said, I typed Poland, so that kills my little theory.

it would've been good if there was something obscure like Andorra or Luxembourg to make the quiz tricky. cant blame the quiz creator for it i guess.

becca: 1980 had Summer and Winter Olympics. The Miracle on Ice was at the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York. The USA did boycott the Summer Olympics in Moscow later that year. Wynne's right, but he's talking about Summer Olympics on a Winter Olympics quiz.

Canyr: I agree with you, but this is based on the IOC, which calls them "Great Britain". I think the quiz SHOULD accept both, but that's the reason it doesn't.
