	It is interesting that 8 out of 11 of the states that formed the Confederacy are represented. Also, Missouri, Maryland and Delaware were border states during the Civil War which, though remaining with the Union, were slave states. Virginia is the only state excluded which is south of the Mason-Dixon Line along the I-95 corridor.

	I realized I used the wrong title. The stats are related to the overall murder/manslaughter rate of each state, not overall violent crime.

	New York and Michigan and such have higher populations, thus the per capita doesn't work for them. There aren't too many big cities in the south, so it's between them and the midwest and New England for most per capita quizzes.

	I must say to any who were surprised by the following: a)Baltimore has HUGE crime, and Maryland has a relatively low population, also, they are right next to D.C. and also neighbor Delaware and VA. b)You hit the nail on the head with the Slave State/Confederacy idea, NM is the only one not fitting that trend. c)NY, IL, and CA are not on the list, along with Michigan, due to the murder RATES, i.e. murders per x# people.

	it's all about crime per capita. i live in Birmingham wich has one of the highest murder rates in the nation. there's no where near as many murders here as the are in NYC, L.A., Detroit, Chicago, or even Atlanta, but our population is much lower than theirs.

	Birmingham had population of 228,314 and had 82 murders reported in 2008. This figures to a murder rate of 35.9. In comparison NYC had a population of 8,345,075 with 523 murders reported, figuring to a murder rate of 6.3. However, Buffalo, NY, which is more comparable to Birmingham with a population of 270,289 had 37 murders reported in 2008. This amounts to a murder rate of 13.7. In order for NYC to have a comparable murder rate to Birmingham, there would have had to been 2,997 murders reported. This is not unheard of if you review the NYC crime statistics from the late 1980's.

	I heard that heat has a correlation with the murder rate so I'm surprised more desert states like Arizona and Nevada aren't on there. That would explain the south though.

	I thought this was a great idea for a quiz BUT I think it's a mistake to use such a recent year. Stats for earlier years (say, 2005, I would guess) may be more reliable. Just as an example: Mississippi counties reported 187 murders and/or non-negligent manslaughters in 2008; the FBI estimated that there were 50 more in counties that hadn't reported as of when the data were compiled. So Mississippi goes onto the chart as having 237. On a per-capita basis, it's quite a leap from 187 to 237. An earlier year (I hope) would have more precision and less estimating. Also, I would love to see the quiz name changed to indicate that we're not only talking about crimes that resulted in an actual verdict of murder; maybe "intentional homicides"? But as the other comments reveal, this was an interesting exercise and an educational experience (when we saw the answers).

	True, Mississippi's data is incomplete, with about 87% of metropilitan areas and 51% nonmetropolitan areas reporting. However, even if no homicides (murder/manslaughter) were committed in these areas (which is unlikely), Mississippi would still have a homicide rate of 6.4, which would leave it tied with Florida, #10 on the list which has nearly 100% reporting.

	Also, Mississippi is the state with the highest degree of delinquency in reporting by far. Most other states in that region have metropolitan reporting which is over 90% complete and rural reporting which is over 80% complete. Most other states outside of the South are much more diligent with their reporting.

	Actually the wealth is not necessarily an incicator of how high that state's murder rate is. The median family income of Maryland is $69,695 (ranked as the 3rd highest in the U.S. Delaware's is $60,352 (ranked as 11th highest in the U.S. Comparitively, Idaho (ranked 47th on the Homicide rate list with a rate of 1.5) is also the 9th poorest state by median family income (ranked #41). West Virginia, the 3rd poorest state with a median family income of $40,827, is ranked #32 on the homicide list with a rate of 3.3. Kentucky and Montana which are also among the top 10 poorest states by median family income also have relatively low homicide rates (#25 and #42 respectively). Obviously using wealth as a standard, Delaware and Maryland should have very low homicide rates, and Idaho, West Virginia, Kentucky and Montana should all have very high homicide rates. This is not accurate.
