| @actwentysix: I suppose it has something to do with the French name (Îles Vierges Britanniques). The codes for other countries are also taken from French, e.g. MAR (Maroc and not Morocco), LIB (Liban and not Lebanon), ROU (Roumanie and not Romania), etc. Probably those codes were created in the first half of the 20th century, when French was still the language of international relations (note that even FIFA is a French acronym [Fédération Internationale de Football Association] although it deals with a sport of British origin as football/soccer). |
