| Y is a consonant when it makes the ya sound, for example youth or year. Y is a vowel when it makes the i or e sound, for example sky or pretty. In the case of Cyprus, it is a vowel making the i sound. In the case of Yemen, it is a consonant making the ya sound. In the case of Egypt it is also a vowel making the short i sound. I'm not sure about Kyrgyzstan considering I don't how it's supposed to be pronounced, but if I had to guess I would say vowel. The second y in Kyrgyzstan, though, is definitely a vowel. |
