I went through every NCAA tournament and assigned points to each team based on the wins they had and what round they were in (see quiz description). The tournament format I put it in here is just for fun but I think it provides a nice visual to see each team's overall success with March Madness. Please feel free to comment and point out any mistakes you see. Enjoy.

Cool idea. I think some of these schools are duplicates...Oklahoma State/Oklahoma A&m are actually right next to each other on the bracket, but they're the same school. Also Memphis/Memphis State. I guess that's pretty impressive for those schools that they managed to get on here under both names separately. Oh, and Texas Western is now UTEP.

Ahh, looks like I have some fixing to do then. Thanks for pointing that out.

Agree w/ zzyzx501, fixing the duplicates and it'll be a solid 5 globe quiz.

The schools are fixed and the duplicates removed but it's going to require a complete overhaul to fix the seeding.. So I've abandoned that format. I know only a few of you saw it but if enough of you would like it back, I'll do my best.

The only thing I caught was that Michigan State has fewer points than Ohio State and they are ranked above them. Maybe this is a typo for total points for Michigan State though. Other than that, great quiz!

Wow, we're the fourth most guessed? Awesome. So grateful for Billy Donovan and his loyalty as well as this quiz!

Terrific quiz! I was hoping Washington Huskies would be on here, but after calculating their score using your scoring system, they fell short by 4 points! Oh well. They'll get on this list eventually. I do ask though that you accept Louisiana State for LSU. Thanks. Again, great game.

Great quiz. Just out of curiosity, how did you calculate the scores from older tournaments when there were less than 64 teams? Did a "first round" win when there were 32 teams count as 1 point or 2?

@Admiral. I went backwards in the older tournaments, so a championship win was still 32 points and the round before that was 16 and so on. So a first round win in 1939 was actually worth 8 points. I used this method because with less teams, it was obviously harder to get into the tournament.

I understand eliminating the duplicated based on the comment by ZZYXZ501. But you should still accept the former names. For example, I entered Texas Western, and nothing happened.

A sorry emh, I had it but I forgot to put a slash after another alternate. Had you typed "University of texas el pasoTexas western," it would have worked ;)

Does a team collect points for every game they win in a tournament> In other words, does the champ get just 32 points or do they get 63 points? How did you assign points for teams who won a play in game?
Sporctastic
:
Feb 23rd, 2011 at 12:56 GMT

@cocky: Yes, each team gathers points for each game they win, so the champion would get 63 total points in today's tournament. And the play-in game has featured teams that are far from the rankings here so it's a non-issue. The closest team would be Morehead State with 4 points, or 4.5 if I assigned points for the opening round.

This year the first round will consist of the wordt four conference tourney winners and the last four at large teams to get in. So you may see some decent teams winning the first game and maybe a couple more. Might be something to consider when you update this in a few weeks.

Great quiz. I made one about teams who struggle in March more than a year ago. Give it a shot: http://www.sporcle.com/games/ClintT13/march_madness_mediocrity

Great Quiz, but where is the team with the most tourney wins w/o a Final Four Appearance - Alabama?
Sporctastic

Alabama only has 32 points. Remember that even though they have 20 total tournament wins, the majority of them have come in the first round, which is only worth one point.

Yeah, they've been to the Sweet 16 a bunch but only made one Elite 8, so getting to the Sweet 16 garners you a whopping three points. BTW, I assume you didn't award points for wins in the now defunct consolation (third place) game?

Considering Florida didn't make it's first NCAA tournament until 1987, placing 15th on the list is pretty impressive

Hey Pogues, ever hear of Butler? You know that team that made the championship game last year? No? What about Notre Dame? Oh, I see, you just have Indiana blocked out of your mind, except for Bobby Knight.

I would like to point out my pride for my alma mater being on here, though Dartmouth was the least guessed. They are the only Ivy League school to make it to the final game, losing in back-to-back years in the 40's.
