	“What Brits call the boot of a car” is just grammatically ambiguous: it could mean “the part of the car that Brits call the boot”, or else “the name that Brits call the boot of a car”. It was presumably intended as the first, which makes it correct, but is getting read as the second, which would be wrong. (Curse you, ditransitive verbs!) Maybe change to a less ambiguous wording?

	"There is one on either side of the San Andreas Fault" suggests that the fault exists independently of the plates, where the fact is that the separation of the plates forms the fault, without the plates there would be no fault.

	Reading through the above comments carefully, everyone seems to have the idea that the clue gives the impression of an inverted meaning of the intended message, resulting in confusion as to whether we Anglo-Saxons call a boot a trunk, which we don't, normally, or if it has been mistakenly phrased as the former, which has a higher probability, but the fact they (the commentators) didn't understand the clue, which may either be because they have less understanding of such configurations, or that the afore-mentioned has not been written according the academic standards common to all, and as the latter is more probable, it would be commendable for one to take the liberty of revealing this to the creator of the quiz, to the extent of implying that a different clue should be produced forthwith.

	Were all of you really that confused? You saw "Brits" and "call the boot of a car," and you knew the answer had to be one letter different from "drunk," and you sat there mystified? Sure, perhaps the clue is slightly ambiguous in its phrasing, but that doesn't make it a BAD clue; it's just a TOUGH clue. I prefer the clues that make me stretch a little bit; I loved this word ladder.

	First I read it as what the Brits would call the boot of a car. Since that made no sense, I decided it was the American term for what the Brits call a boot, especially as it had to follow "drunk".

	@Cerdog: It says that 89% got the first clue. And 96% got "truck" for the clue "18-wheeler or semi." And for that matter, 93% got "trunk." I don't mean to sound like some kind of Darwinist, but if someone didn't get "drunk," "trunk," or "truck," then maybe the quiz was just too hard for that person. I don't think the point of every quiz is to make sure every player gets a perfect score; the quizzes are fun because they're challenging.

	The controversial clue for the second entry is interesting, because Britons and Americans will naturally interpret it in different ways. If you're British, you consider that the cargo space of a car IS a boot--not just called one--and you expect the clue to read "What Americans call the boot of a car". If you're American, you consider that this space IS a trunk--it's the British who call it a "boot", and you read the clue as asking for the primary name of that thing that "Brits call the boot".
