Can you name the alternate spellings of Muammar Abu Minyar al-Gaddafi's surname?
Enter an answer in the box below
Correctly named answers will show up below
Answers do not have to be guessed in order
Because of the difficulty transliterating Arabic to English, there are several different ways to spell Gaddafi. Just be glad we didn't ask for the entire name!
Note: In the interest of sanity, 'Al' and 'El' are not included in the name.

Why in the heck are there so many? Awesome quiz by the way.

Dude, that last column is brutal!
Mar 21st, 2011 at 19:51 GMT
Wow... a Sporcle quiz creator's nightmare with all those alternates that would need to be accepted.

Nice touch using different spellings in the title and "can you name" part. I'd change one of them to be different than the URL though. Maximum confusion! ;P
Mar 21st, 2011 at 23:33 GMT
you missed Qadaffy Duck
Mar 21st, 2011 at 23:39 GMT
NvjdsIsSmart - there's so many because there is no standard method of transliteration for Arabic names into English. Usually the preferred spelling of the person will be used, but Gaddafi has not indicated what spelling he prefers and even uses multiple spellings on his own website, but what do you expect from such a nutcase?
Mar 21st, 2011 at 23:44 GMT
Yeah...I made a quiz once with Gaddafi as an answer. It wasn't pretty! Who knew?
Mar 22nd, 2011 at 22:06 GMT
@diving - You have an incredibly good point at the end of your answer. Thanks for answering!

Dayum that was a toughie. I could only get 7
Mar 23rd, 2011 at 16:19 GMT
A crazy name for a crazy guy
Mar 23rd, 2011 at 16:20 GMT
I got 9. Here in Brazil, we call it mostly Kadafi. Some say Gadafi, though
Mar 23rd, 2011 at 16:27 GMT
It's a good thing you didn't include his first name -- that probably would double the number of answers!
Mar 23rd, 2011 at 16:54 GMT
really hard - i only got 7 :(
Mar 23rd, 2011 at 17:26 GMT
I'm surprised just plain old "daffy" isn't a bonus answer.
Mar 23rd, 2011 at 17:49 GMT
Argh! That was frickin' difficult! And fun. I'm also amazed at how many of my guesses failed, when they seemed no less logical than the ones that make it into print. A rough estimate of the number of possible permutations for each phoneme (only the last a is constant): Ga, Ka, Gha, Kha, Qa, Qua: 6 d, dd,dh, dhdh, dth, th, zz: 7 a: 1 f, ff: 2 i, y: 2 That's 168. Good luck guessing which are on the list.

Who clicked "Give Up" instantly just to see how many ways his name can be spelled?
Mar 23rd, 2011 at 18:09 GMT
I missed the most-got one (Gadafi) and yet scored at the 96th percentile. How the hell is that even possible?
Mar 23rd, 2011 at 18:14 GMT
Mar 23rd, 2011 at 18:15 GMT
@Uhlan... sporcle math. Actually, the numbers measure two separate items. Most-got is for each individual answer. The percentile is based on the total number of correct answers you gave, not any specific answer.
Mar 23rd, 2011 at 18:16 GMT
Hah, I only got 14/31. But great quiz. This must be að world record: 31 ways to spell your surname...
Mar 23rd, 2011 at 18:30 GMT
@emilkr: Considering that his name can ALSO include the prefix "al-" or "el-" the number of spellings increases by at least a couple dozen (that's including the variations which capitalize the prefix and those that don't use the hyphen).

A few weeks ago I was reading an old (mid-80s) Firestorm comic... and one of the characters (a newsman) made a throw-away line about how he wished they could come to a consensus about how to spell Gaddafi. It's kind of amazing that not only is he still relevant, but there's still no consensus. I would have thought the major English news sources would have agreed by now to spell it one particular way just to make it simple, even if Gaddafi himself isn't consistent on it.
Mar 23rd, 2011 at 18:39 GMT
I thought there were just 4, but no. Sporcle strives to make me even more confused.
Mar 23rd, 2011 at 18:40 GMT
I tried "Godawful," hoping for at least a bonus answer.
Mar 23rd, 2011 at 18:42 GMT
A rose by any other name...would still be a prick.
Mar 23rd, 2011 at 18:43 GMT
I think I bamaged my drain.
Mar 23rd, 2011 at 18:45 GMT
There are a lot of different spellings of "Muammar," too. Mabye make another quiz for his first name?
Mar 23rd, 2011 at 19:04 GMT
At one point I seriously considered typing Joe, just to see.
Mar 23rd, 2011 at 19:09 GMT
Wouldn't **** be an acceptable answer? That's how I've always seen it spelled.
Mar 23rd, 2011 at 19:10 GMT
So 31 ways to spell his name . No wonder the guy looped out and wired himself to the moon . Godaffi nor Gadfitti were noted nor was Gadaf****e nor the more popular Gob****e . Somebody needs to find a place for this kookaburra to flee to before any more innocent people are killed ? How about it Tristan Da Cunha or Madagascar or Kiribati ?
Mar 23rd, 2011 at 19:32 GMT
How is it that there is no option for "C" but there are many for "K"? Weird - I was guessing "C" and didn't try "K" at all cuz I got frustrated.
Mar 23rd, 2011 at 19:35 GMT
kinda makes Bush not look so bad after all
Mar 23rd, 2011 at 19:36 GMT
and this was most definitely NOT "too-US centric" of a quiz

why are we laughing at a man who in David Cameron's words is 'brutalising his own people' this is not the time for quiz making, this is a time for action.
Mar 23rd, 2011 at 20:48 GMT
@JamesSnell Yes you're quite right, the sporcle staff and users should cease making and taking quizzes, and form a private militia to go into Libya and remove him ourselves. C'mon, its a quiz website! What d'you expect it to do?
Mar 23rd, 2011 at 20:51 GMT
you should also accept "dead man walking"
Mar 23rd, 2011 at 20:53 GMT
Sorry if my suggestions cause offence, I am just angry he has a right to do this to his own people, @delToro87: very funny come back, though!
