Great quiz. I found it to be very cleaver. I got all the capitals pretty quickly and spent the rest of time figuring out the elements. I got about half of them before the time ran out.

It would help if you read the rules, which I didn't. Doh!

I like this idea. It would help if I knew my state capitals, or my elements. I also think it would help if the letters going down lined up, so you could just read them straight down.

Neat quiz. Maybe get people to answer in order? Stops people like me just guessing capitals when they can't remember where they belong.

Thanks for the feedback. If you enjoyed the quiz there is a similar sequel with world capitals, see below:- http://www.sporcle.com/games/Sporcla/capsincaps

The letter count in Minnesota's capital should be based on its full unabbreviated name.

Shortcut for finding elements: Look at lower half for any column that ends with "ium".

I completely agree with bwouns. The capital of Minnesota is "Saint Paul". We write it as "St. Paul" for convenience, but the 5th letter of the city's name is 't' not 'u'.

Be careful, be careful... anyone who knows the periodic table will think of "Group I" as the alkali metals (i.e. Lithium, Sodium, Potassium, Rubidium, Cesium, Francium) + hydrogen, as Group I is the first group (column) on the periodic table and hence the elements with 1 electron in their valence shell. I spend quite a bit of time puzzling over this.

This is really hard to do since the answers aren't lined up in columns - like visually too hard to do that and count. Gave up after the first one. I got the concept though.

Maybe instead of centering all the capitals in the column, they could be aligned to the left to make it a tad bit easier to try to get the elements. I don't think this quiz has enough time. Interesting concept. Not sure about the execution.

Maybe tell us which letter needs to be grouped to make the element. Otherwise, other than carbon, it's total guesswork.

I agree with Acid_Snow: labelling the columns "Group I", "Group II" etc. made me think that that was the group the element in question was in - please find a labelling system which doesn't give such a potential for confusion.

Good quiz. Like the idea, liked the execution. I do agree with Springmom, though: Please don't center capitals in the future. Trying to figure out which word is spelled by the 6th letter of capitals was painful.

Agreed.. it was painful trying to skim down every possible column to see which letter to even use. Re the "shortcut" to look for "ium".. not so much. You'll only get three that way.

If at all possible, you need to use a monospaced font so we can have a chance to read the elements vertically. I got all the capitols but only one element (cobalt) 'cos I could not read them.

The state capitals should be lined up vertically so you have a chance to see the elements the capitals spell. Otherwise, there is no chance with this quiz.

@All. I agree with the non-centered thing, but that's not possible on Sporcle nor is it possible to change the font. The only possible way to do would maybe to put some dashes in certain spots in the answers to try to align them (while of course making just the name still acceptable).

Great quiz! Centering the capitals just added to the challenge, in my opinion. As long as you know state capitals, this isn't too difficult.

It took me a few moments to figure out what I was supposed to be doing. I know it's in the instructions but I still didn't really get it right away. Maybe if Carbon was the first group it would help - that one jumps out - then group II was the 2nd letter, group 3 the third letter... I still almost had time to finish, so it's fine the way it is, that's just what I would suggest changing to make it easier.

Agree, too hard to do since the words don't line up. We got most of the elements just by randomly guessing 6 letter ones.

The groups really need to have a different numbering system. When you're dealing with elements, you shouldn't have unrelated "Group I"s and "Group II"s floating around. If anything, just change the group numbers to Arabic numerals (1,2,3) instead of Roman numerals (I,II,III) solely for the reason that the periodic table uses the exact same notation.

@cry babies: Learn how to count. It isn't that difficult. Nice quiz. Challenging enough for a person with half a brain, but seemingly too tough for people that can't count higher than one or two.
