	Besides those mentioned above, I think it's questionable whether the Crusader states = the Holy Roman Empire, and whether it makes sense to count the Arab caliphates as a single "empire". (I tried entering 'abbasid' and 'umayyad' without success.) Also, Byzantium should be accepted (especially since the wording is "the empire of...").

	Saracens acceptable? How about Seljuk Turks (I could be wrong there). And why not avoid a whole lot of unnecessary political wrangles by rephrasing it to Who Ruled [or Governed] Israel/Palestine. Who needs debates about whether Empire X really "owned" the Holy Land, or whether Israelis or Palestinians (or both or neither) "own" the country today? Who actually ruled is a relatively neutral value-free question most of the time; who "owned" it is and was disputed in terms of philosophy, morality, religion ("Our Holy Book says it's ours, so G-d gave it to us!"), history, ethnography, international law and right of conquest.

	Phrasing is too specific. I tired "ottoman empire," "ottomans," "turkey," "turks," but not "ottoman turks." Also tried "Muslim caliphates," "caliphates," "abbasid caliphate," "umayyad caliphate" (in various spellings, not sure if thats right), "muslims", "dar al-islam," "mohammed," and a bunch of other things before giving up and rolling my eyes when I saw "Arab Caliphates."

	I am sorry for the inconveniances. I have given the answers more possible answers. I see you are confused as to the terms I used ,owned and independence.While the country often acted of its own accord in civil affairs the land in the area can be "owned" by an Empire.For instance, from 141 BC until 70 AD Israel existed under roman supremasy and had a Monarch of its own.Many other countries had israel as a territory.

	I agree completely with MillieRose. I tried everything I could think of for the 638 CE entry, but none of them were accepted. You really need to give more options besides just "Arab Caliphates". I also agree with shakescene that "ruled" is a better word choice than "owned". Finally, I think that between the Hellenistic and Roman periods of rulership in that region, there was a brief Jewish rulership following the Maccabean uprising.

	"Arab Caliphates" needs to be broken up into the Arabian Umayyads and the central Asian Abbasids, and I've never heard anyone refer to the Mamelukes as "Egypt and Damascus."

	just a guess, but i think by "was granted independence", the quiz maker meant from the british, especially considering there was a struggle against the british government to get it granted. it would be difficult to get independence from a group that hadn't held governmental authority over the area in 30-40 years...

	Holy Roman Empire? WTF? Surely 'Kingdom of Jerusalem' or just 'Crusaders' should be the answer. Frederick II is like the only significant person from the German/Holy Roman Empire to successfully crusade, and that was in the 13th century. Never in my life have I heard it said that the 'Holy Roman Empire' owned Israel.

	Agree with all above statements. Plus, this quiz needs to start prior to 722 BCE. The way you've put this together, it completely ignores the ancient Israelite and Judean kingdoms in the land that is the modern-day State of Israel.

	this quiz is a bit misleading. in 722 B.C., the assyrians gained control of the northern section of the land (i.e. israel), whereas the land of judah stayed in jewish hands, until 597 B.C., when the babylonians took the rest. for the purposes of the quiz there's really no need to change anything, but i just thought it should be said.

	"Arab caliphate" doesn't make sense. It should be "Islamic Caliphate" or just "caliphate". Also, you should accept crusader kingdoms in addition to "Holy roman empire".

	This is a really good idea for a quiz, but as stated above the answers are too specific and inconsistent. e.g. Rome (not Roman) but Byzantine (not Byzantium/Eastern Empire) or Alexander the Great (not Greek/Macedonian). What has happened to the Philistines/Canaanites/Phoenicians etc?

	The Holy Roman Empire specifically means Germany at that time. Jerusalem was held by Crusaders of different nationalities. Also, don't forget the Jewish kingdoms of Judah and Israel, and that Assyria conquered Israel and Babylon conquered Judah. Also, the Hasmonean kingdom was reasonably independent and lasted 100 years.

	You're really inconsistent in terms of what you'll take. Please add Umayyad or Abbasid (or preferably both) or even just Arabs or Caliphate(s) (all of which I tried) since I couldn't figure out that I had to specifically type Arab Caliphates.
