| Maybe allow "CSA" for Confederate, or just allow U, C and B, to save unnecessary typing. West Virginia was definitely Union in 1863 (she consists of the 24 counties that would not secede in 1861 with the rest of Virginia), despite the fact that in today's politics you'd have to call her a border state. The big missing state is of course California (admitted 1851) which was a Union state with a sizeable number of Confederate sympathizers. Also Oregon (admitted 1859), a Union state. And if you're including Kansas and W. Va, admitted during the War, then you also need to include Nevada, a Union state ("Battle Born" is one of her mottoes) admitted in 1864. |
