| @Skold: if your purpose is to get us to learn the specific names of the UN Geoscheme, then what you have now is fine. If not, then koipen's suggestion is reasonable. It does seem that there is a pattern to the naming scheme. When a region corresponds to an entire continent, then the name of the continent is used, for example, South America, rather than Southern America. If however, only a part of the continent is used then an "-ern" suffix is used. Examples: Eastern Africa, Northern America (North America minus Central America and the Caribbean), South-Eastern Asia, etc. The one that tripped me up was Middle Africa, when I was expecting Central Africa (which was perhaps not used to avoid confusion with the Central African Republic). Australia and New Zealand is a strange one, but I guess the UN couldn't come up with anything better and neither can I. If you do take koipen's suggestion then I would add: East Africa, Central Africa, North Africa, South Africa (now I can see the reasoning for using Southern), West Africa, etc. A fun and interesting quiz. |
