| Interesting that two of the wrong answers, MC Hammer and Goo Goo Dolls, fall in to the same category of being denied a #1 song on a technicality. "U Can't Touch This" and "Iris" were both sat atop the national airplay chart for several weeks ("Iris" setting a record at 18 weeks), but at their peak were denied a spot on the Hot 100 because there was no commercial single of the song released (or in MC's case, only as a 12" single). Both songs eventually became available as singles on the usual formats, but it was after their popularity had waned a bit and the songs only scraped the top 10. Billboard has since rectified this and allows non-singles to chart. It was only during the early '90's that this discrepancy occurred. (No Doubt's "Don't Speak" falls into this category, too.) |
