It might make the quiz too easy, but maybe a time frame for the conquerors?

Thanks for the comments. Kaleb - I originally designed the quiz with year(s) included, but, yes, I thought that made it too easy. Sporcle only allows me to include three columns, so I had to remove one...

It's Mahmud of Ghazni, not Ghanzi. Also, he only conquered small parts of Northwest India. Most of the land he conquered covers modern Afghanistan, Pakistan, the other "stans," and Iran.

Just FYI : Napoleon also conquered a huge chunk of Italy and present-day Slovenia and Croatia.

I'm shocked Julius Caesar isn't on this list. I would think with Gaul, Pontus, Italy(conquering it from Pompey/Senate), and Egypt it would put him over Cortes, and Pizarro at least. Also what about Mehmed II he conquered Anatolia, Constantinople, parts of eastern europe to Belgrade, and parts of greece? Anyone agree, or disagree?

I had Caesar number 3 on my list and was surprised as well that he doesn't even make the top ten.

Thought that some of those western European leaders from France, UK, Portugal, and Spain would make it with the colonies. And perhaps the US president who oversaw the takeover of New Mexico and California from Mexico.

Genghis Khan is incorrect as an answer. It is a title meaning something along the lines of Imperial/Impervious Ruler. Temujin Khan would be a correct answer.

yes - they personally conquered all this land on their own - not the mighty hordes under their command

You should accept alternate names.

Ditto on needing to accept alternate names (especially Timur for Tamerlane, since the former is the more accurate anyway). And please fix the typo in Mahmud Ghazni, too.

You should also accept Chinggis Khan, that's the modern spelling. And Temujin would also be correct. I also have to ask, why is Peru not included for Pizarro?

I sort of expected to see James Polk. How many square miles were annexed during his presidency?

@elevatorman, it was Octavian Augustus Caesar that conquered Egypt, in 30 B.C.E. Remember Antony and Cleopatra?

@trivial- That's an interesting question. From what I'm gathering, the Mexican Cession was about 500,000 square miles. If you want to include Texas it would be an even larger figure, but I don't think that the annexation of Texas could be considered "conquering".

I enjoyed this quiz, and I agree that the Mexican Cession doesn't really qualify as "conquering" per se.

It's possible that some of the people mentioned in the comments were just completely missed by the authors of The Book of Lists. That series of books is not known for its accuracy...(It's the Wikipedia of the 1970s!)
