Although I only watched four of these, I did rather well thanks to the nonstop 'Year of the Sequels' coverage on the news this week.

never thought i'd say this, but hooray for the smurfs being the highest ORIGINAL (i.e. not sequel or prequel) movie on the list.

@beatrix: Since Smurfs is based on a series, I think that honor should go to Rio.

Do the totals for this week not count toward 2011 gross? Just wondering, since Tintin would probably move up the list if you count Fri-Sat of this weekend (Dec 30-31).

They should, but I don't know how often they will be updating this. With the 2010 one I updated the list until all the 2010 movies had finished their run.

@Sheldon It accepts "Harry Potter 7" but not "Harry Potter 8". Technically this is the eighth film, though of the seventh installment. As far as updating published quizzes, it's a bit of a pain, but if you email the admins they should do it for you. You can do that through the feedback link on the bottom of the page, and some of the admins leave an email address on their user pages.

Speaking of sequels, isn't it hard to believe that we are already on the 8th "Super" movie??!?

@jonnywardy: It's a **** year for popular films, like most years. There are always good indie pictures under the radar.

Odd how even though much of the list is aimed-at-kiddies animation or brain-dead films like Transformers or Fast Five, no one complains that "oh, the movies these days are sooooo much worse than those from 10/20/50 years ago". And yet, when a list of this year's pop songs comes out, half the commenters feel it necessary to state how proud they are about how little they know of the list.
@Tcatron: Tintin came out this week in the States but it's been open in most of the world for months. Speilberg knows the built-in audience for this film is mostly European, so that's where it opened first. If it does ok in the US, that's gravy.

This year was crap for movies but next year looks good! The Hobbit, Dark Knight Rises, Avengers, Wrath of the Titans, MIB III, Prometheus ... It seems like Hollywood is expecting the Mayan calendar to be correct so getting the good stuff out before Armageddon.

@brichards719: Because a lot of people probably tried "Harry Potter" and then gave up after it didn't work.

@tcatron565, Tintin did just come out in the USA, but it was already released in Europe (where the original comics are most popular) and also some Asian countries back in October/November.

While I like the fact that we have to type out the full title (i.e. 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows' as opposed to just 'Harry Potter,') please keep it consistent. After seeing this trend, I assumed I had to type in "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn" to get the answer right, but it doesn't accept that; I had to shorten it to just "Breaking Dawn" to get it. Please accept the full title. :)

I never made it that way though. It is actually very lenient in what it accepts. "Pirates 4" for example is enough for On Stranger Tides. All other sequels just require the respective number as well (except for "Harry Potter 8"; forgot to add that one in).
I only accepted the sequel names and/or numbers as opposed to the generic franchise name because it is about the specific movies that came out in 2011. While you shouldn't (and don't) have to bother writing out the full title, you should at least know which instalment it is up to.

You can't say its a '**** year for films' based on which ones made the most because then you ignore the great films of the year like Moneyball, 50/50, Sherlock Holmes, I am Number 4, Immortals, Crazy Stupid Love, The Muppets, Adjustment Bureau, In Time etc etc
