	He wanted top billing over Newman in BCATSK, so that was a no go. He thought Doyle was too reminiscent of his role in Bullitt a couple years earlier. And, as a newlywed, the idea of spending 16 weeks in the Philippines jungle for Apocalypse was too much for him.

	also sunset blvd is the name of the film rather than sunset boulevard. was confused when it didn't count!

	AdamL is correct. I don't know who voted him down. Most of these roles are so iconic that I can't imagine them being played by anyone other than the actor who ended up with the job. Bette Davis would have ruined GWTW. Robert Redford wouldn't have had the career he had w/o BCATS - there'd be no Sundance Institute for one thing.
