	Bhutan was an independent country at the time, and it should be Czechoslovakia instead of Slovakia. Hitler only took the sudetenland before the invasion of Poland, just a small part of Czechoslovakia. Keep these quizzes up. They're fun!

	Bhutan was under British protection and I don't believe Danzig was a fully independent state. Czechoslovakia was actually dismantled by the Germans earlier in 1939.

	Nice quiz! Learned something new (Tuva). @TreehuggnCowgirl: Hitler had invaded and occupied the rest of Czechia (Bohemia & Moravia) in the spring of 1939, and Slovakia declared independence at the same time, so Czechoslovakia had ended to exist as a state.

	Iceland wasn't independent until 1944. Manchukuo existed from 1931-1945. You can argue about its "independence", but not about the date.

	@EGaffney: The statute granting legislative independence to the British dominions in 1931 only applied automatically to Canada, South Africa, and the Irish Free State. It had to be ratified by Australia, New Zealand, and Newfoundland to take effect in those dominions; this happened in the 1940s for the first two and never for Newfoundland.

	Iceland wasn't independent until 1943. You can certainly argue for it, but if you do, then you really have to accept India (not really independent but one of the Dominions in the League of Nations and the Statute of Westminster) and the Commonwealth of the Philippines (which the U.S. treated as quasi-autonomous in the 1930's). On the other hand, if you count Ethiopia/Abyssinia as independent but occupied, then you might as well include Albania, and certainly Danzig.

	Lets not make quizzes based on how we would like to see the world. Instead, shall we make quizzes about how the world really was? Iceland and Ethiopia have no business on here. Danzig does, as it was a free and independent city (much like Hamburg, Bremen and Lübeck were before Germany was united in 1870). Iceland proclaimed their independence in 1944 while Denmark was still occupied by Germany. Ethiopia, while occupied, cannot be considered independent, by the very definition of independent.

	While I disagree with apeurobuff that the British and French mandates in the remnants of the Ottoman empire are in any way analagous to Ethiopia, I don't think that Ethiopia should be included.

	Iceland is an interesting situation. As I understand it, it was technically sovereign and merely in personal union with Denmark from 1918 onwards. However, conduct of foreign policy as delegated to Denmark, so it had no international profile. Andorra and Monaco were, I believe, in a similar situation, so if you don't include Iceland, you probably shouldn't include them either. The current countries whose situation is closes to that of Iceland between 1918 and 1944 are probably the Cook Islands and Niue, which are in "free association" with New Zealand. They are generally not considered sovereign states.

	Tibet's independence is also a complicated question. I think the generally accepted status of Tibet prior to 1950 is that it was under Chinese suzerainty, but not Chinese sovereignty. That usually translated to it not being included in lists of sovereign states.

	I'm not sure about Danzig - it was self-governing, but I don't believe it was considered sovereign - it was under the sovereignty of the League of Nations, or some such. In general, I think that questionable cases should probably be turned into bonus answers - I'd probably make Danzig, Tibet, Iceland, Ethiopia, Czechoslovakia, India, Philippines, Syria, Lebanon, Andorra, Monaco, and perhaps a few others into bonus answers.

	I believe Iceland was quite independent, I think it's better to compare it to the current Commonwealth Realms than the dependencies of New Zealand (I thus rescind my previous comment saying Iceland should not be here, it should I have found after further research. Sorry). Danzig is a country, it was a free city, probably comparable to Luxembourg or the Singapore of now (Don't quote me on that though)

	I think Danzig should be on here at least as a bonus, if not a full answer. Ethiopia was occupied in 1936 and it is on here, Albania was occupied less than half a year before the date for this quiz, yet it is not on here. If Ethiopia is listed, so should Albania. Iceland was independent in 1944, so should not be on here.
