| Also, Namor is often an antagonist, but he's not a villain, either. They didn't give villains solo titles in the 60s, and he was given a solo title. His appearances all throughout that decade are neutral. He's a power of his own, and to be respected, is the general tone of them. In Daredevil he fights him (nobly) and parts with respect for Daredevil. In X-Men, Magneto and Professor X each try to recruit him, and he leaves on nobody's side. His Fantastic Four relationships are obviously very complicated. But he's definitely a hero in the 60s or at least a neutral antagonist. Gambit also has to be counted a hero, which is unfortunate because Claremont's intention was to have him become a villain. But he was off the book too soon afterward and then the Niciezas and Lobdells of the world bowed before his popularity and made him an out and out regular hero.
I'm also wihth bluewhite in that my comics reading ended about 97 or 98, but from all I've read, so did most people's, and comics went to hell in the 90s anyway (and have since fallen off a creative and commercial cliff), so that all the stuff that's happened since we stopped reading (of which I'm somewhat aware) just - doesn't matter. |
