You shuold specify it's American, at least, I think it is. Otherwise rice would definitely be on there.

Accept Pancake Flour for Pancake Mix, Soft Drinks for Cola, and Crackers for Saltines. Maybe also Mayo for Mayonnaise.

Parmesan should have cheese to it and be accepted when you type in cheese. I also tried tomato sauce. I would not have thought to add plain, flavored, or pasta. Accept just noodles for egg noodles. and I agree about accepting crackers for saltines.

Just "oil" should be enough to trigger all sorts of oil.

I have to agree with those that say more should be accepted. As is it is somewhat inconsistent. Garlic triggers a few, yet oil doesn't. Also, singular form should be accepted (tomato vs. tomatoes), and soya sauce for soy sauce. Otherwise good quiz.

Thank you for the suggestions the appropriate changes have been made. I did not designate this as "American" because the source did not specify.

given that kraft is an american company, (and ketchup's spot at number 1) this is probably an American list. they must have left milk off for some reason, because im sure well over half of american households have milk on hand

I was almost certain that every house in the country has a can of pumpkin pie filling in the furthest recess of their pantry. I think sometimes they're there when you move in.

I'd add pasta as an alternate answer for spaghetti. Plus you should also accept the fruits/vegetables in the singular--I typed in "potato" but never occurred to me to type "potatoes".

I agree that the omission of milk is strange. I was also amazed beer didn't make the list. I know it's on my shopping list every week!

@jimmyjames: Canned pumpkin should be on the list. I can't imagine that people are otherwise making use of all the spices on the list very much. I cook and bake a lot but still only use ground ginger once a year - in pumpkin pie!

Maybe take "stock" or "stock powder" for bouillon powder? Also it should take "bay leaf" as well as "bay leaves". But good idea for a quiz.

"Bicarbonate of soda" for baking soda would be a nice addition too. Also "Worcester sauce" because, you know, it's shorter. I must be doing quite well for myself as only 17 of these items are missing from my kitchen right now, and most of those are fairly America-specific (Pancake mix, really? When all you need is flour, eggs - and that elusive milk I suppose..)

There's too much inconsistency here. Garlic gets you garlic, garlic salt, and garlic powder but cocoa doesn't get you hot cocoa nor does bread bring up bread crumbs etc. It seems arbitrary.

There's a reason that items such as milk and other "real foods" aren't on here. This is a list of PANTRY items, which means mostly things that are shelf-stable. It isn't actually a list of the most common foods in the USA, but of the most common pantry items. There's a significant difference (and the misleading title is Kraft's fault, not the quizmaker's). The omission of rice is surprising, though.

Cool quiz, but if you accept "onion" for "onion flakes", I think you should do "lemon" for "lemon juice" and "orange" for "orange juice".

@chocolatl: That's what I thought at first, but who leaves butter, chicken breast or eggs at room temperature?
Chocolatl
:
Jul 16th, 2011 at 05:10 GMT

It doesn't, and I didn't, say at room temperature. In fact many, many people leave butter at room temperature to make it easier to spread, and many people, especially in Europe, do store eggs at room temperature. But the important point here is not "room temperature," but the fact that these are pantry items in the minds of those who answered the survey.

@chocolate: I guess I'm confused. Are pantries not room temperature? Can they be refrigerated? And most relevent to this quiz: Does anybody store chicken breast, American cheese slices or bacon (for cooking) in a pantry?

I'm also surprised at the omission of rice. At first I was also wondering why there were so few vegetables, but then I realised that it's just foods you'd get in cupboards etc., so most things that would go in the fridge are omitted.
