I think per capita would proabably have Vatican City featuring fairly highly.

Most of these were fairly guessable, most having a Catholic tradition but also Orthodox as well.

@Roman: In 2009 Ireland had a higher than average GDP per capita. Greece, Spain, Italy & Cyprus all had around the average ($28-30k) GDP per capita. Of the countries on the list only Romania is in the bottom 20% GDP per capita in the EU.

@ronny_jubber, @Roman: many of the poorer EU countries are in Eastern Europe, where religion took a sustained bashing under communism for decades. Conversely, in most of the richer EU countries, religion has been suffering a gradual decline due to secularism and social liberalism. Which together leaves these ones, mostly in the middle...
