LOVE this idea. So, so much. I disagree with bates above, however- I think it doesn't allow ENOUGH time. My rationale for that is that, because the sound is 4.5 minutes long, and the quiz is only 6 minutes long, having to type in "definition###" and "etymology###" can take up a lot of time. I got 22 before running out of time, but 1) I'm a good speller by nature (my mom was an English teacher), and 2) there were very few of those 22 for which I needed more than one attempt, and I didn't guess on any that I got right more than twice. So I don't know what bates's rationale was (to each his own, I suppose), but without taking six or seven incorrect guesses on the entire quiz, much less a single answer, I still ran out of time. Plus, for anyone complaining about the "dead time" in the quiz... if you know a word from the first pronunciation, you know you can just skip five seconds of the sound clip, right?
Saul, to cut down on the time used to get a word just a bit, might I suggest shortening the clues from "definition0##" and "etymology0##" to just "def##" and "etym##"? |
