I really like the guy, but Whedon really sticks out like a sore thumb here. Kind of an odd inclusion considering he has completed one film in his life, and not a memorable one at that.

@shibbyhibby - Firstly, don't knock the Whedon. Secondly, I get your point but unfortunately many more prolific directors aren't very recognizable. If this was just a Q&A quiz then I'd have picked some different ones but since I've gone with the picture option, it seemed like a better choice to go with at least a few that were really well known.

I've never seen Tim Burton before, but I was able to recognize him immediately. He looks just like a character from his own movies. Kind of disturbing.

I wish John Landis were here, if only because I (as a straight male) find him inexplicably adorable.

I'm going to put a theory out there: so few people have recognized Ingmar because he seems to come out of nowhere. All but four are American and all but one are contemporary. I'm not nit-picking the list, just trying to justify Bergman being so low. Of course, it's probably more likely that no one recognizes him.

Guys, actually, this is a series of quiz and this is the first one. The directors mentionned above are on the other ones. I have to say, I've played the quizzes when they were in the user created section and I liked them. I'm pleased it made the front page ! =) Though people should really recognize Kubrick more, he's one of the best ever !

Spectacular array of directors. Great quiz, even though I should've done better. Brava, Sarah.
But wow, only 7% getting the director of "Spirited Away" and "Princess Mononoke"? Come on, people! I'm not much of a movie buff, but that man is a legend.

Joss Whedon? Directors like Spike Lee, David Lean, David Lynch, Peter Weir, Michael Mann and Francis Ford Coppola are absent but a man who has directed one film (and not a particularly great film) is on the list?

@rct: The reason i didn't recognize Ingmar Bergman is because I only knew what he looked like when he was older (e.g. being interviewed by Dick Cavett in the early 70s, watched on Youtube recently). Other directors, like Hitchcock, are so distinctive-looking they are recognizable at any age.

And to those who whine about the author's selection: make your own damn quiz. It's easy to be a critic, even if you're right in your critique. Find out how hard it is to make a quiz that will please everyone.

Having only seen Luis Bunuel in pictures where he was much older, I was convinced that that was him and spent the last minute trying to get the tilde to work over the n in his last name.

I guess directing dozens of episodes of beloved and genre-busting TV, often episodes that you've also written, and thereby developed a recognizable "auteur"-ish style all your own, doesn't get cred around here.

I always get Ingmar Bergman confused with the actress who was in Casablanca. Not visually confusing their photos, of course, but when just their names are in writing. (Yes, this comment is a bit random - sorry about that).
