Cool. Something is wrong with your numbers, though--a mile being longer than a kilometer, the lengths in miles should be smaller numbers than the lengths in kilometers...

@CAV - Check out croatia's outline on a map. It's very jagged and has lots of small islands, both of which contribute to a long perimeter. It was on the longest coastlines quiz a good number of months back. I like this one... mainly because I got my last one with the clock at 00:01! Split second choice between adding a Q or N to Ira. :)

Ah, good old Croatia returns! Time limit was just right. Too bad no Solomon Islands and Micronesia this time. Would have been better if the numbers were divided by land area.

I always type Dr C, and in every single quiz that it is included as an answer, it is approved. Nice quiz, didn´t see Croatia coming.

These quizzes are always a bit flawed. See Mandelbrot's seminal paper "How long is the coast of Britain?" for why coastline measurements are always a bit arbitrary.

@ micah thanks, a little mix up with my conversions. and @Onno I'm thinking about a quiz comparing this to land area, just need to find the time to put the data together. Similarly might add a quiz for shortest perimeters. thanks for playing.

I'm going to leave Denmark for now, this is how it is included on the longest coastlines quiz as well. Besides it doesn't spice up the quiz to much to remove it and add Malaysia. If you liked this quiz compare the answers to the countries with the longest land borders....http://www.sporcle.com/games/SWert/Land_Borders

This is another one of those quizzes where the method of measuring coastlines has a huge impact. Countries with jagged coastlines and/or many islands have big advantages over other countries.

Fun quiz. I never would have gotten Croatia if I hadn't done the "longest coastlines" quiz a while back.

Coastline measurements are always arbitrary due to their fracture nature, making these rankings less than ideal.

Blah blah, Mandelbrot and his fractals. It is possible to look at things too closely...literally. There are accepted figures for these things, and unless you want to be unrealistically picky they're good enough. Still, I find it hard to believe we have a longer coastline here in the UK than Sweden and Finland.

Funny how 26 and 27 are neighbors and have only ~1 mi/km difference in perimeter.

Coastlines and an accurate measurement of length are important for lots of reasons, the main ones probably being military, shipping and financial. So for instance if I were to sell you an island (the reason Croatia, Greece and the UK rank so highly) you would want to know exactly what you were buying, wouldn't you?

I believe Papua New Guinea should be on here. It has 5,182 km of coastline alone(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_length_of_coastline) not to mention the border with Indonesia

i think it's safe to say that almost all of us are shocked to find out that croatia has over 4000km worth of coastline on its isles. i know i was. NOT surprised to see canada at #1 with a HUGE margin over the next closest, with all the land area and winding coastlines of the west coast and hundreds of northern isles in the arctic, that is to be expected.

Perhaps the quizzes based on names of countries should start penalizing incorrect guesses. There are so many quiz-takers that have learned to bang out the names of most countries in 8 minutes that it's easy to score at or near the 100th percentile just by typing...

lichenboy: At least people are thinking and visualizing countries...LEARNING. It's not like people type Fiji then erase, Cuba then erase, etc. I don't think I should be penalized for Saudi Arabia. BUT...if it was part of a unique quiz and not sporcle protocol than that would be cool. Oh yeah! Cool quiz SWert.

It appears I have Sporcle-Syndrome, and it's effects of typing Kyrgyzstan hoping for it pop up as a bonus while you know it won't be a real answer.
