	Leon isn't really correct, Leon only contained about half of Portugal and much of spain. I don't think that you can really have Portugal on the list. I mean if Portuguese independence from Leon is there, you might as well have the independence of France from the Romans. Also Austria and Hungary could both be there from Austria Hungary.

	johnlk: Thanks for noting, I fixed it. Deeisenberg: The Portuguese state did declare independence from Leon. It's similar to the US, which also declared independence from the UK, but later grew to be much bigger than it originally was. The reason I put in Portugal and not most other European countries was that it was the only one which did seem a clear moment when it declared independence from another state, unlike say France, which basically developed out of a Germanic tribe with many odd twists in between. Austria and Hungary could be there, but I considered the constitutional status there to be somewhat too complex to include them (for example, the Ausgleich might actually be a more defensible date for the independence of Hungary and 1955 may be better for Austria).

	For Egypt and Syria, what about the United Arab Republic? It existed from 1958-1961 and was a union of the two countries. If Serbia can be said to have "gained independence" from Serbia and Montenegro, the UAR should count too...

	Yes, there are a number of such short-lived unions of states that I chose to ignore (also the "Federation of Arab Republics", for example, which apparently existed from 1972 to 1977). I think it's comparable to giving 1581 as the date of independence of the Netherlands even though it was briefly part of France (1810-1813). Serbia-Montenegro is different because that was a direct continuation of Yugoslavia. The alternative would be to say that Serbia gained independence from Yugoslavia, which is wrong.

Well, Serbia had a past history of independence, so you could have it as gaining independence from the Ottoman Empire. Yugoslavia did last a lot longer than the UAR, though, so I can see why you treat the two cases differently.
