| Peashooter, Peacemaker, and Aardvark were never officially adopted. They are nicknames only. Straight-winged F-84s were Thunderjets; swept-winged F-84s were Thunderstreaks. The designation B-26 referred to both the Martin Marauder and Douglas Invader at different times. The F-102 was the Delta Dagger; the F-106 was the Delta Dart. "Mohawk" was the RAF name; the P-36 is usually known as yet another Curtiss Hawk. The USAAF did not begin giving names to aircraft until just before WWII, so the various Hawks were company names without the sanction of an air service. The F-5 was known as the Freedom Fighter or the Tiger II. |
